USCGC Polar Star – Flood Alarm System Recapitalization U.S. Coast Guard | Mare Island Dry Dock, LLC (Prime Contractor)

FSE designed and fabricated a complete flood alarm system for the USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10), the nation's only operational heavy icebreaker, as part of the vessel's Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). The $134,631 project delivered a modern Siemens PLC-based monitoring system replacing the original 1973 flooding alarm infrastructure.

The scope included two master controller stations for the Engineering Control Center and Pilothouse, two standard controller stations at the port and starboard Quartermaster Shelters, and six Data Acquisition Units distributed throughout critical machinery spaces including both diesel generator rooms, the gas turbine room, motor and gear room, motor room, and bearing room. Each station featured permanently mounted or mobile HMI panels, audible and visual alarm notification, and Siemens remote I/O architecture.

The system monitors 13 float alarm switches across seven zones and was engineered to meet or exceed ABS requirements for steel vessels under 90 meters.
