A Standard Motor Controller, typically referring to a Direct-On-Line (DOL) starter, is the most straightforward method for starting an AC electric motor. This controller directly connects the motor to the full line voltage when activated. Composed primarily of a contactor for switching the power and an overload relay for basic motor protection against overcurrent, the DOL starter is a simple, economical, and reliable solution for many applications. While easy to understand, install, and maintain, applying full voltage instantaneously results in a high inrush current and significant starting torque, which can cause mechanical stress on the motor and driven equipment, as well as potential voltage dips in the electrical supply. Standard motor controllers are generally suitable for smaller motors and applications where the driven load can withstand high starting forces.
